Don't use Slime Tire Sealant in Your Scooter Tires!

I guess this customer figured he would put a tube into a tubeless tire and rim then add a bunch of slime tire sealant for good measure.

In reality the rim is bent too! Mistake after mistake.

Avoid Rim Corrosion

Here's a picture of a rim that was filled with "stop a flat" or a similar corrosive. As you can see the rim is corroded which can cause a new tire to not seat properly and lose air.

The Three Basic Tenets for Scooter Owners

Over the last seven years selling and servicing scooters I've managed to distill three basic rules for scooter owners. If you follow these three rules you are much more likely to enjoy your bike.

Don't let anyone else ride your bike. This is the most common accident for scooter owners.
Don't let your scooter sit without riding it. Ethanol in gas causes problems if your scooter has a carburetor, not as bad for fuel injected bikes but still it's better to ride it. Once a week is a good rule of thumb.
Follow the maintenance schedule or better yet change your oil no more than every 1000 miles. Most issues can be avoided with regular maintenance. Check your tires often. Check your oil often. Check your turn signals, horn, brake light, etc. The better you are at sticking to a good maintenance schedule the longer your bike will last.

Stop-a-Flat and other sealants cause more harm than good

Although stop-a-flat or other types of sealant product may seem like a good idea to seal a puncture on your scooter these products actually corrode the rim and eat through the paint on the inside of the rim.

When we receive a bike where the customer used stop-a-flat we will have to clean the rim completely and either sand off the corrosion or in extreme cases replace the rim. If you have to use these products make sure to get your bike into the shop ASAP before you damage the rim beyond repair. Any pitting or corrosion that cannot be sanded off will cause a slow leak between the tire and the rim because the tire bead will not seat properly.

Ethanol in gasoline and the problems it causes

California gasoline has 10% ethanol, which is bio fuel. The problem with this is that when a scooter or motorcycle, or for that matter anything with a carburetor, sits for awhile, even as little as two months, the carburetor jets get clogged with shellac as the gas evaporates.

There are multiple fuel additives sold to address this issue including Stabil, but I'm not sure that any of them actually work. I would need to see testing or perform my own.

In the meantime, HB Scooters suggests that you ride your scooter once a week for 20 mins to prevent this problem.
